About Breeze

Breeze — named for a phrase meaning “light wind, thin clouds” — is an independent iPhone app for people managing gout and high uric acid. It is built by someone who has had gout for years, which shows up mostly in what it refuses to do.

Why it looks like this

Gout is a lifelong condition managed in the gaps between appointments, and the tools for it tend to fail in one of two directions. Either they ask for so much data entry that people quit in the third week, or they overreach — turning a handful of self-recorded events into confident claims about what caused a flare, or quietly turning a food chart into dietary advice.

So Breeze is built around three limits. Recording has to be fast enough to survive a bad week: about ten seconds for a uric acid reading, one tap for a flare. Data has to earn its keep by giving something back — a trend line, an adherence rate, a report worth handing over. And the app never crosses from recording into diagnosing: reference values name the guideline and year they come from, trigger analysis reports frequencies rather than causes, and nothing suggests a medication or a diet.

What it is not

Not a medical device. Not a doctor. Not a community, a shop, or a lead generator for anything. There is no account, so there is no user list; there is no server, so there is no analytics dashboard of what you eat. The app does not need to know who you are in order to work, so it does not ask.

Where the data comes from

The purine library of 830 foods is assembled from two published sources, each kept intact rather than blended:

  • Dietary Guideline for Adults with Hyperuricaemia and Gout (2024 Edition) — the National Health Commission of China's 2024 dietary guideline for adults with hyperuricaemia and gout. 398 foods, extracted from appendix 1, which is also the source of the lower thresholds of the scale used on this site, and the four-level scale used in the app.
  • USDA and ODS-NIH Database for the Purine Content of Foods, Release 2.0 (2025) — published by the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 432 Western and international foods, including alcoholic drinks.

Values are total purines in milligrams per 100 g of the food as described, including the preparation it was measured in. Where the two sources cover the same food, both entries stay, each with its own number and citation. No attempt is made to match food names across the two languages — that shortcut is the most common reason a purine app displays a value belonging to a different food, and avoiding it is worth the occasional duplicate.

Uric acid reference values quoted on this site come from the American College of Rheumatology 2020 guideline, the EULAR 2016 recommendations and the Chinese Guideline for the Diagnosis and Management of Hyperuricaemia and Gout (2019), each named where it is used.

Corrections

If a number here does not match its source, we want to know. Email anhompeter@gmail.com with the food and what you believe the correct value is. Every food page in the app has the same link built in — it opens your mail app and collects nothing.

We will correct anything that misquotes a source. Where the source itself looks like an outlier, we will say so on the page rather than silently substituting a number we prefer.

Status

Version 1.0 is in TestFlight beta for iPhone, covering uric acid tracking, medication reminders and adherence, flare logging with factual trigger review, the offline food library and the PDF report. English and Simplified Chinese. It is free, with no ads and no subscription.
