The app

Is Breeze available yet?

Breeze is in TestFlight beta for iPhone and is not yet on the App Store. The free tools on this site — the 830-food purine database, the uric acid converter and the level chart — work today in any browser and need no account.

Does Breeze work without an internet connection?

Yes, entirely. Everything including the food database is stored on the device, so it works on a plane, in a basement restaurant, or with mobile data off. There is no server for it to fail to reach.

Where is my health data stored?

On your iPhone, in a local database. There is no account, no cloud sync and no server holding a copy. Nothing is uploaded — which also means nobody, including us, can retrieve your data if you delete the app without exporting it first.

Does Breeze tell me what to eat or which medication to take?

No, by design. It records and summarises. Purine values describe foods, medical reference values are shown with the guideline and year they come from, and trigger analysis reports how often a factor appeared before your flares without claiming it caused them. Diagnosis and treatment belong to your doctor.

Which languages does Breeze support?

English and Simplified Chinese, switchable in the app and following your system language by default. Every user-facing string — chart labels, notifications and the exported report included — goes through the language files, so adding a language means translating a file rather than rewriting the app.

How is Breeze different from other gout apps?

Three things. The purine database carries both Chinese and Western foods with a citation on every row, rather than one region's list or values mapped across languages by name. Flare triggers are reported as frequencies rather than dressed up as causes. And there is no account, no cloud and no data collection, so there is nothing to opt out of.

Is Breeze free?

Yes. Version 1.0 is free, with no ads and no subscription. If paid features arrive later they will be additions such as AI food recognition; the core tracking stays free.

Will there be an Android version?

Not yet. Breeze is built natively for iOS first. Android is on the roadmap rather than in development, and the browser tools on this site work on any phone in the meantime.

The purine data

Where do the purine values come from?

Two published databases, kept separate. 398 foods come from appendix 1 of the Dietary Guideline for Adults with Hyperuricaemia and Gout (2024 Edition), published by China's National Health Commission. 432 come from the USDA and ODS-NIH Database for the Purine Content of Foods, Release 2.0 (2025). Every row in the app and on this site names which one it came from.

Why not merge the two food databases into one clean list?

Because merging means matching food names across two languages, and approximate matching is how a purine app ends up showing you a number that belongs to a different food. Where the two sources both measured something, the Chinese entry keeps the guideline value and the international entry keeps the USDA value. Occasionally you will see two similar-looking foods with different numbers — that is the honest result, not a bug.

What are the six purine levels based on?

Six bands: low under 30 mg, fairly low 30–75, fairly high 75–150, high 150–200, very high 200–300 and extremely high above 300. The first three cut lines are the Chinese NHC 2024 guideline's; the 200 and 300 mg lines come from the Japanese gout treatment guideline, which draws its high band at 200 and its extremely-high band at 300. Combining them is our editorial choice, but every threshold is one a guideline already draws. We went to six because the NHC's top band alone holds 220 of the 830 foods and spans 150 to 1,399.7 mg — cooked chicken breast and dried anchovy fell in the same colour nine-fold apart, which is not a useful thing to tell anyone. Band names stay faithful to their sources, so the NHC's third band is 'fairly high' rather than 'high'. Every food page also shows how three national schemes band that food, which is why the same food is labelled differently on different sites.

Can I report a value that looks wrong?

Yes, and please do. Every food page in the app has a correction link that opens an email — no account, no form, no data collected. If a value does not match its source we fix it; if the source itself is the outlier we will say so rather than quietly change a published number.

Using it day to day

Which iPhone models and iOS versions are supported?

iOS 16 and later, on iPhone. There is no iPad-specific layout yet and no Mac version.

Do medication reminders work when the app is closed?

Yes. Reminders are scheduled as local notifications, so they fire whether or not the app is running, and they do not need a network connection or a server.

Can I get my data out?

At any time, in two forms: a full JSON export of everything you have entered, and the PDF report for appointments. Both go through the normal iOS share sheet, so where they end up is your decision.

What happens if I delete the app?

Your data goes with it. That is the direct consequence of storing nothing on a server: there is no backup we can restore, because we never had a copy. Export before you delete, or before switching phones.
